Down at the pond on Sunday morning 21 boats turned out for the RC Laser AGM Regatta. The AGM took place before the sailing got underway and the good news here is that the present committee was unanimously re-elected to run Durban's biggest and most competitive class for another year. This can only be a good thing for the class. By the sound of things the sailing was far more intense here than it was on the bay with several reports of crash and burn racing from various sailors who took part. Several of Durban's top skippers took part in the racing including Harry Ellens who has recently purchased himself a boat as well as Craig Millar and Jerome McLoughlin, both of whom have not been seen at the pond for quite some time. The north easter was perfect for racing on the pond and was right at the top end of big sail conditions. Absence clearly makes you sail a bit better with both Jerome and Craig putting in strong performances. In fact it looks like Jerome might have won the regatta had he not had to leave with three races still to sail. Still he was able to finish fourth overall. Craig Millar didn't leave early but also didn't win, although when I saw him later in the day he told me that he thought he might have. It was close but not close enough with Norrie Taylor, a sailor who is definitely not short of practise finishing at the top of the fleet, two points clear of Craig. The sailing was followed by a well-attended braai at the pond. A great day all round, well enjoyed by all who took part. In the regatta the top five places overall were as follows:
1st Norrie Taylor 17 Points
