SA Team At 2005 Optimist European Champs - Race Day 4 - 3 Races Sailed

Today the Race Committee managed another three races albeit with a bit of controversy around whether they should have blown the first race of the day or not. Race day 4 got going with the wind exactly opposite to that forecast and coming from the W it was a totally new direction to what we had seen before. Light 5-7 knots and flat.

After the usual hectic launch and a 25min run out to the starting area Race 7 got going on time. RSA seemed totally asleep and off the pace with four poor starts and consequent mediocre results. It seems that these guys here aren’t even intimidated by an I flag as they reach down the start rolling anyone in a decent spot and even overtake to windward! I have suggested that RSA be seriously more aggressive. But halfway through the race the wind died and came back from all over the place in several different directions. Neil managed to cross the fleet with a private puff and finished second! What he gained in the lottery the others lost!

A severe Team Talk got RSA back on track and their starts this time were markedly improved. Generally at least, too we seemed to be in sync in the shifts. Leo had a horrible race getting caught on the wrong side.

The last race started after 15h00 in very light and flukey conditions which at one stage was barely 3.5 knots. Everybody battled to retain the concentration as they had been on the water since 10h00 in an average ambient temp of 32-34 degrees! Lejan showed her tough mettle and finished 20th.
