I second Rob’s comments about the Interschools regatta and, despite being a staunch Laser supporter over many years, I also support your views regarding the Dabchick being the ideal boat for teenagers to learn about what actually makes a boat fast. When one gets tired of adding and changing fittings, adjusting mast rake, altering foil profiles and buying new sails with the latest cut – then it is time to learn to sail a Laser and hone sailing skills as opposed to boat building skills. Until then, let the youngsters enjoy playing around in and with boats, together with a bit of help and encouragement from the parents, but no more than just help and encouragement!

The Western Cape Interschools was held 10 days ago at IYC, which has always been a strong supporter of the Dabchick class. The Dabchick is still flourishing in the Western Cape and as a result we Capies continue to dominate the sailing scene in this country in virtually all classes!

Our Interschools also attracted a similar entry of 60 odd boats, with Opies making up about half the fleet. These Interschools events are fantastic in their ability to get new faces on the water and into the regatta scene and I hope they continue to be so well supported.
