The Junior Lipton Cup Regatta as it has become known took place at TSC on Hartebeespoort Dam this weekend with some 16 teams of youngsters sailing on J22's. Of the 16 teams which pitched up for the regatta there was one each from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban with the balance made up of Gauteng based crews.
KZN was represented by only one team this year with Jamie Barker, James Hogg, Aaron Larkens and Michael Bisset. With none of our four having any real experience on a J22 or anything similar for that matter they were no expected to be taking home much of the silverware but nonetheless sailed very well to record a 6th place overall and will no doubt be very pleased with this result.
5 Races were sailed on Saturday in an ideal 5 to 10 knot breeze. The race officer did well to call the fleet in off the water only a short while before a great hail storm lashed the dam. Sadly Sunday did not provide suitable weather for any racing to take place so the event ended with 5 races having been sailed.
Once again this regatta has proven to be very successful and popular with the young sailors. It gives them a good opportunity to gain some experience looking after themselves in a relatively big boat. It is just as pity that the regatta does not get better advanced publicity as it could be even bigger! The top three places in the regatta went as follows:
