HMYC Monthly Mug - Sunday 28 April 2002

The following is HMYC Commodore Dave Claxton's report on Sunday's Monthly Mug sailed at HMYC. what Dave does not mention is that there was a far greater turnout of boats and people at the club than eventually took to the water but the light airs and delayed start of what turned out to be the only race of the day saw to it that many did not make it to the start line and even then not all starters made it to the finish. And Dave's PS at the end is also slightly incorrect, Getafix is in fact a very slow boat, she just got lucky with a fluckey puff! Hopefully the handicappers of next Saturdays race will take this into account!

"The Monthly Mug, which could have been quite interesting in view of Getafix's entry, became a very frustrating drift when Riddell and Nico saw the fleet off in the morning's race, in a very light North Westerly. Before the leading boat reached the windward mark the wind had died, changed direction, and the race had become a lottery. The fleet took the decision to abandon the race and had to be towed to shore.

After lunch the wind changed to a NE but was very light, with the Bridge seeing the fleet off at 3.00pm with the faint hope of getting 2 short races in. Getafix, skippered by Andrew Heathcote, was first to the windward mark followed by Odin's Eye, Mike Tarbie on his Laser and Hunter 2010 (Richard Willington & Crew). Tantrum, with owner Reg Ross, Sandy Ostendorf and Dave Claxton followed on Richard's heels managing to nip past them on a very tight reach to the gybe mark. It was gratifying to hear Richard's discontent... very vocal indeed..(he was sailing with a chap who had never stepped onto a yacht before, so we will accept his excuses...) It was interesting to watch Getafix gybe wide on the longish run to the leeward mark as she stretched her lead in very light conditions. Tantrum reeled in the Laser and sailed neck and neck with Hunter 2010 to the bottom mark. The positions remained static until the beat up after the "sausage leg", where Tantrum and Hunter 2010 had a ding-dong battle thinking the race was ending (as per the briefing), with the L20 cover tacking the very experienced Willington all the way to line only to find that the Race Officer (bless his soul) had lengthened the race!! In the end, only two boats finished the race, the rest being time-barred.

Results
1st Line: Getafix
2nd: Odin's Eye

1st Handicap: Getafix
2nd: Odin's Eye

PS: We gave Getafix the same handicap as a L26, in other words made her 14 minutes faster than a Hunter over 100 minutes. This will be fine tuned for the 9 Hour, because if the wind does blow nicely next Saturday that boat will finish way ahead of the competition... she is very quick..."
