The Freestate Junior Champs took place in very light conditions at Sterkfontein Dam this weekend. Although only three races were sailed it sounds like a good time was had by all. The following report and results were submitted by Rob Walker:

"Sterkfontein and the Freestate Provincial Champs has come and gone with a frustrating lack of wind! But by all reports this was not the case for the Africans squad training offshore Vetchies at the same time. The Sterkies event was well attended by a fun bunch of 21 Oppies & 16 Dabbies. Congrats to Vincenzo De Gennaro and Bridget Clayton for winning the Optimist and Dabchick Classes respectively. See the results attached. Sadly, KZN had to be content with the ruddy banana for the 3rd successive row!! Well done Northvaal and thanks particularly to Ian Jones and Peter Clayton for organising a lovely event, also all those parents and sailors who mucked in. It's a clean, cheap venue and the social scene every bit as good as the sailing should be, so it's an event not to be missed next year!

Good news. The general consensus from parents (Northvaal & KZN) is a preference for the KZN Optimist Provincials to be held 3rd, 4th & 5th October 2003 at HMYC, Midmar. Hopefully, we will get the final go-ahead from HMYC and I will inform OCRA and other calendar bodies and book these dates and the venue. Northvaal are planning to have their Provincials the weekend before i.e. 27th, 28th & 29th September at Aeolians, Vaal Dam."
