World Sailing Speed Record Broken
Team Shosholoza skipper Geoff
Meek and crack SA America's Cup crew members Alex Runciman, Guido Verhovert and
Marc Lagesse finished eighth overall in the final standings of the Nippon Cup,
a Swedish Match Tour event, held in Tokyo, Japan. The South Africans beat Japan's
top three match racing skippers plus a German skipper Sven-Erik Horsch, who
like Meek is new to the Swedish Match Tour, the world's leading professional
sailing series. Participation in the event is by invitation only and it is only
since South Africa entered her maiden bid for the 32nd America’s Cup
in 2007 earlier this year that Meek has been included in the high profile line
up. The team raced in the Portuguese leg of the Tour in July. A total of 12 top skippers were competing
in Japan on identical Yamaha 30 yachts. The Nippon Cup was won by the USA's Ed
Baird. His victory gives him the overall lead in the Swedish Match Tour
Championship so far, a position previously held by New Zealander Russell
Coutts. Coutts has won the America' Cup three times and skippered the Swiss
Team Alinghi challenge to victory in Auckland last year. Second was Gram-Hansen (Den), third Dean
Barker (NZL) and fourth (Peter Gilmour (AUS). Team Shosholoza was again
prominent in the press releases at this regatta with their bowman Marc Largesse
making the news when he fell overboard in one of their early matches. By all
accounts Largesse did well to keep a hand on the boat and clambered back on
board without causing the team to lose too much ground. The good news is that
Team Shosholoza weren’t the only ones to have crew going overboard with the
bows of the Yamaha 30s sounding like they were quite difficult to stay on. For
more information on the Swedish Match Tour visit www.SwedishMatchTour.com.
Rob Walker sent us the following report on
the second round of the KZN
Grand Prix Series:
“The
second event in the KZN Grand Prix Series was held at HMYC, Midmar this weekend
20th & 21st October 2004. Despite most Youth Sailors
being involved in exams there was a good turnout of 11 Optimists and a strong
fleet of 25 Lasers. The winds on Saturday were variable in strength and
direction but averaged around 8 to 12 knots from the South West. Bridge Crew
Rob Walker & Judy Gray set 2 races in the morning and three in the
afternoon under overcast skies. Dave & Jean Wagner laid out the course
which involved several changes but gave excellent races of 40 minutes each.
Top
Optimist skipper Rudy McNeill shared line honours with ‘man of the match’ Sam
Hancock. Sam went overnight in top slot with a narrow one point margin over
Rudy. Emma Walker gave both these sailors a run for their money nailing down
three 2nds in the five races. In the Youth Laser fleet Aaron Larkens was
clearly untouchable getting a straight string of firsts. Second place was
secured by Michael Bissett and third position overnight was occupied by HMYC’s
Luke Wagner. The racing was of a high technical standard and these youngsters
are commended on the way they tackled the not so easy to read conditions. The
Senior Lasers were dominated by Daniel Larkens with Andy Gray backing him up.
Though Andy let Steve Martin slip through once in the last race of the day.
Steve Martin had to be content with third overall.
Social
activities on Sat evening included a braai and Bingo.
Sunday
started off benignly enough with a moderate North Easterly. Racing got underway
early with Rudy getting another 1st in the Opti fleet. David Leigh
repeated his earlier form getting another second place which was enough to send
Sam down to Rudy by one point overall. Positions in the Youth Lasers were also
changed when Bryan Martin scored a second followed by Jean-Marc George. This
put Jean-Marc and Luke Wagner overall tied on points but the count back saw
Jean-Marc ahead of Luke. Michael Bissett however retained his 2nd
overall. In the seniors Andy Gray rattled Daniel Larkens cage, forcing him to
eat some dust!
Just
after the first triangle of the second race a huge 25 knot gust swept down on
the fleet building a fierce chop in a matter of minutes. At one stage 15 Lasers
were upside down and two Optimists!! Fearing the worst the Race Officer
abandoned and sent the fleet home in a hurry. Several rescues had to effected
and the race crew had their hands full.
With the onset of rain
further racing was cancelled.”

The World Sailing Speed
Record was broken on Saturday, the 13th of
November, by Irish born British Virgin Islands resident, Finian Maynard.
Sailing a highly customized windsurfer, pictured below, in the 'French Trench'
in the South of France, Maynard upped the record to 46.82 knots. The previous
record was 46.52 knots set by Australian speed machine Yellow Pages 11 years
ago. That the record had stood for so long says something about just how
difficult it was to beat! The breaking of this record also marks the return of
the record from a conventional sailboat, well, relatively conventional at
least, to a windsurfer. Speed sailing seems to have been in a bit of a decline
in the last decade however at present there are a number of teams making
preparations to try and break through the mythical 50-knot barrier. These
include Brit Paul Larson with his radical Sail-Rocket that was launched earlier
this year and the same Australian syndicate who previously held the record with
Yellow Pages. Unluckily for them their new speed machine, Maquarie Innovations
suffered a spectacular capsize earlier in the same week that Maynard broke the
record, leaving the boat in pieces! They promise to be back and making an
assault on the record in the near future though!
The AR Munnik Legal Eagles
Charity Yacht Race 2004 took place on
Saturday the 13th of November 2004 at Royal Cape Yacht Club. This
prestigious annual charity fundraising sailing event has grown in stature and
participation since its inception in 1992. The event is open to all law firms
and members of the legal fraternity [nationally]. The 2004 AR Munnik Legal
Eagles Charity Yacht attracted 40 local and national law firm teams involving
some 500 - 700 participants and spectators attending the post race
function/prize-giving. It goes without saying that the event carries the
support of all the Royal Cape Yacht Club members, many of whom are legal
practitioners. The Club also considers the event as part of its social
responsibility program as all monies raised through entry fees are donated to
the Red Cross Children’s Trust and the Club’s Sailing Academy, which focuses on
development sailing. After the howling S/E yesterday, it was fortunate that the
race was sailed in light S/SW swinging to S/SE winds, and the results were as follows:

Below is the latest communication from South African Sailing in the form of two information leaflets dealing with
power boat registration and the SAS Levy System:
SAS Information Leaflet
No. 2 / 2004
In this Leaflet:
SAS charges for power boat
registration.
The
purpose of this Information leaflet is to advise Clubs of the background and
subsequent situation regarding the registration of powerboats by SA Sailing.
There was
never any intention by SAS to register power boats until it became apparent
that there was no authorised agency to administer either the power boats
belonging to sailing clubs, or those power boats owned by members of multi
disciplined Sailing or Yacht Clubs.
As result
of this and after discussions with SAMSA it was agreed that such vessels could
be registered and inspected by SAS in the same way as for sailing vessels.
The SAS
Constitution was amended to allow for the affiliation of organisations that had
been handling both power and sailing craft under the previous legislation. The
amnesty period to allow those affiliates joining SAS after April 2004 to
register their boats under the new regulations was extended originally to 31
October 2004 but in view of another late affiliation this date has been amended
to 30 November 2004.
Thus
after 30 November 2004, the cost of SAS registration of all vessels sail or
power will be the same with the following exceptions:
Power
vessels owned by Clubs for the committee boats, mark laying or rescue for which
the current cost is R150.00.
Sailing
dinghies at Coastal Clubs for which the current cost is R65.00
Yacht
tenders do not require registration.

SAS Information Leaflet
No. 3 / 2004
In this Leaflet:
The SAS levy to continue through
2005.
SAS
Council must advise all member Clubs that it has no option but to continue with
the levy system of raising SAS finance in the year commencing April 2005.
SAS has
requested member information to back up a considerable amount of effort by
individuals who have been investigating more equitable ways of raising fees and
providing members with value for money.
The
Clubs’ failure to provide such information and by the dates requested, means
that there is insufficient time left in the current financial year to allow for
the investigative process to be finalised and voted on by Clubs in time to
introduce any possible new system by the start of the next financial year. As a
result, the existing levy will be continued through 2005.
Clubs
were asked for their cooperation in investigating an alternative as mandated by
the Clubs, and this would have been put to the vote before acceptance. The lack of response by all but two Clubs
does not justify continuing the investigation at this stage. The matter will be
held in abeyance until such time as members actively support such efforts.
