The Hobie 16 Worlds took place in Mexico last week with South African sailors faring well. Blaine and Roxanne Dodds ended the regatta in 10th position with William and Lucinda Edwards one place behind in 11th. David and Janine Kruyt finished up in 31st place. For more information visit the excellent regatta web site at www.hobieworlds.com.

The Laser Worlds get underway tomorrow, the 12th of May, when the first race of the regatta is due to be sailed. This year’s event is taking place in Bitez, Turkey. With all the Olympic slots in this class already allocated this will be an interesting test of the sailors big match temperament ahead of the Olympics in August. One of the things about the Laser class is that we know who is fast and who is not and there are rarely any surprises. South Africa’s Gareth Blankenburg will be taking part and being ranked 6th in the world will be expecting a good result in this regatta. Gareth’s form in the Hyeres regatta last week wasn’t quite what we might have expected of him but hopefully he will be able to pick it up and notch and get a good result in this worlds. He certainly has the talent, lets hope he can get it together on the water. For more information visit the regatta web site at www.laserinternational.org/w04index.htm.

The J22 Worlds started yesterday in Annapolis, USA. A big fleet of 130 boats taking part. As seems to be the case with most J22 World Championships the majority of the fleet is local although there are entries in this regatta from the Netherlands, Italy, Canada, Ireland and the Cayman Islands in addition to the strong local fleet. Also taking part is occasional Smooth Sailing correspondent and well know South African sailor Alon Finkelstein although we did note with some disappointment that Alon has a USA prefix in front of his sail number! Perhaps he will be able to explain this to us in the regatta report that he doesn’t know he will be writing for us yet! After 3 races Alon is lying 30th with a 40, 30ZPF and a 20th to his name. The regatta ends on Friday. For more information visit the event web site at www.j22.org/worlds/.

Cape Town might be known for it raging South Easter but it was certainly not anywhere in sight for the Sedgwick’s Old Brown Sherry Regatta held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club on May 15 and 16. 49 Yachts - from Royal Cape, Hout Bay and False Bay Yacht Clubs - entered the regatta, now in its 9th year.  However, on Saturday, May 15, skippers and crew had to be content with watching rugby on the big screen and cheering to the World Cup Soccer announcement at the clubhouse as the fog set in and the wind refused to blow,so the day’s racing had to be cancelled.  Of course this did mean that the sponsor’s drink was very welcome! Sunday, May 16 dawned bright and warm and with a slight breeze which meant the regatta was on.  The first race of the day was the medium distance Bay race of approximately 12nm in Table Bay with all 49 yachts starting together at 12h20. The breeze continued to push through, and by 15h00 the Race Officer was able to set a windward/leeward course for Division One and Two boats.  John Martin and his development crew on MTU Fascination of Power were not able to defend their Division One 2003 title but came a close second to Bally Hoo Too skippered by Iain Park-Ross who took top honours.  Sensation, skippered by Mark Sadler, was the Division 2 winner with No Promises and Lapwing in second and third place respectively. Billy Martin, brand manager for Sedgwick’s Old Brown Sherry said that he was thrilled to be associated with the regatta, despite the unseasonably warm weather.  “What is really encouraging to see is the growth in the development of sailing.  Not only did we have some of the crew from Shosholoza sailing this weekend but the crew on four yachts were all part of the development drive. “We look forward to celebrating our decade of sponsoring this fun event next year.  We certainly hope that the weather is more favourable for sailing conditions - which also lends itself to quaffing the warming “elixir” that we promote,” continued Martin.

While still basking in the glory of South Africa's successful bid to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup, another South African sporting delegation is in Switzerland this week to submit the country's first ever Challenge in the world's premier yachting event - the America's Cup. Representing a new challenge for the America's Cup, and the first ever from the African Continent, the challenge will be officially lodged with the America's Cup (AC)management in Geneva, Switzerland, tomorrow morning (Wednesday 19 May) on behalf of Cape Town's Royal Cape Yacht Club. The South African America's Cup Challenge is the second challenger after the Italian Circolo Vela Gargnano Yacht Club's Clan des Team sailing team to join the Golden Gate Yacht Club's Oracle BMW Racing team in challenging for the 32nd America's Cup to be held in Valencia, Spain in 2007. Oracle BMW is the official challenger of record as they were the first to enter a challenge against the Swiss Alinghi Challenge - the current holders of the America's Cup after their victory in New Zealand last year. The Royal Cape Yacht Club's Letter of Challenge signed by the club's commodore, Mr Russell Vollmer, plus other required documentation, formalities and funds will be presented to the CEO of AC Management, Mr Michel Bonnefous in Geneva by a South African America's Cup Challenge delegation led by Challenge managing director Captain Salvatore Sarno. Captain Sarno, who is also chairman of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (South Africa), is driving South Africa's maiden challenge with huge passion, vision and commitment. Captain Sarno confirmed that a Performance Bond of one million Euros (a form of deposit ensuring participation in the event and cover against any possible debt in Valencia) and an entry fee of 50 000 Euros will be paid to the AC Management. In addition 25 000 dollars will be paid to AC Property in a separate trademark agreement for usage of the America's Cup logo. The Royal Cape Yacht Club is one of the oldest and best-known yacht clubs in South Africa. Situated at the foot of Table Mountain on the Atlantic Ocean in Cape Town - Africa's centuries old tavern of the seas - the Club is famous world-wide for its warm hospitality. The Club has generated entries in many international events including the Whitbread, the BOC, the One Ton, 1/2 Ton and 3/4 Ton World Championships. Locally it is the centre of offshore yacht racing in South Africa. The Royal Cape Yacht Club are the trustees of the Lipton Cup in South Africa and are well known for their summer Table Bay Week regattas and high profile trans-Atlantic Cape to Rio yacht races. Geoff Meek, skipper of the SA America's Cup Challenge 2007 and a champion SA yachtsman with numerous world championship titles to his name, has been a member of the Royal Cape Yacht Club since 1970.  Accompanying Captain Salvatore Sarno in Geneva are Mr Brian Bayliss, the financial director of the SAAC Challenge 2007 Syndicate, Dr Luigi Saidelli, an Italian based businessman, who will represent the South African Challenge on the AC Challenger Commission and Mr Didier Botge, a Swiss based lawyer. Captain Sarno said Dr Saidelli, although based in Portofino, Italy, is a director of the Cape winery, Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, with close links to South Africa. He was selected as the South African America's Cup Challenge representative on the AC Challenger Commission after he expressed enthusiasm for the campaign during a visit to South Africa. He is well known in Italian yachting circles and has previous America's Cup experience through the Venetian-based IL Moro de Venezia Challenge. Dr Saidelli speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish, and being resident in Europe means easier and less costly access to the Commission meetings in Valencia. Mr Botge is a personal friend of Captain Sarno's who has offered his services to the South African America's Cup Challenge 2007.
