News By A Sailor For Sailors!
In
Association with:
The 2004 Vasco Da Gama Race has been launched at last. Having lost it's sponsor late in the day, frantic behind the scenes work failed to produce a replacement, simply due to the short notice. However, having built up a good reputation amongst the people who count, the sailors themselves, the show must go on. Sailing KZN, the organisers, are pleased to announce that for the 3rd year in succession Clube Naval in Maputo, is the Host Club, and has in fact sponsored the Welcoming Party traditionally a cost for the event. With value a "must have" the organisers chatted to both the Point Yacht Club and Royal Natal Yacht Club about the event, and credit must be given to both these historic clubs as they both opened their doors to the us. In the end, only one club could be the official Welcoming Club, and due the RNYC offering to sponsor the first 100 breakfasts for finishing yachtsmen, and a Marquee for our prize giving, they cracked the nod. Sailing KZN would like to place on record a sincere thanks to both clubs for the way in which they both unreservedly stepped up to the plate for the event! Interest has already reached fever pitch, and in the past month the organisers have received calls from every Port of significance in Southern Africa from yachtsmen and women inquiring about the Race. That should also read "Dam", as no less than four serious inquiries have been received from the Vaal Dam. Word has it that there will be 3 Mount Gays on the start line in Maputo, come July. Read all about the event, on their new "cost cutter" web site, where you will find every document you need for the event, plus a lot more information as it is released. Your attention is drawn to the new domain address being www.2004vascodagama.com. If you have a Race inquiry, email Dave Claxton on vascodagama@iafrica.com or the Race Secretary, Sandy Ostendorf at sailsa@hit.co.za. Smooth Sailing will soon be carrying "breaking news" on the PORT LOUIS TO DURBAN RACE 2005, so watch this space.
The
Algoa Bay Yacht Club’s Nelson
Mandela Bay Isuzu Week
regatta is taking place in Port Elizabeth this week. Conditions for the regatta
have so far been near perfect with moderate winds and flat seas. Some might
prefer a little more wind but none will argue that its been a very pleasant
week on the water so far. The fleet is divided into several divisions with IRC
Class One the smallest with only six boats. This is a real pity given that IRC
is the only credible handicap system available at the moment. PHRF Class One is
being contested by the same six that are sailing under IRC and two other that
don’t have IRC ratings. It is a real pity that this has happened as it more
than likely means that the real focus of the regatta will be on the winner of
PHRF Class One. PHRF Class Two is the
biggest with 31 boats taking part and it also appears that this is where the
best racing is taking place. Also
competing is fleet of 8 cruising boats and as well as four Hobie 18
Tigers and three Tornados who seem to be enjoying some close racing on the
water. Four races have been sailed to date, two on each of the days racing so
far. A medium distance race is scheduled for Thursday however with no wind this
morning and the fleet all still in the harbour there is a chance that this may
be replaced in favour of more round the cans racing. The Full Results and Pictures
of fleet in action have been posted on the Smooth Sailing web site at www.smoothsailing.co.za. The leaders in each of the classes after
four races are as follows:

After more than 60
days at sea, Olivier de Kersauson and his Geronimo crew have
officially lost their quest to set a new round the world sailing record. Steve
Fossett's record on Cheyenne stands at 58 days 9 hr 32 min 45. It also looks like Geronimo may need a few breaks to beat the Jules
Verne Trophy time set by Bruno Peyron on Orange in 2002 of 64 days, 8 hours, 37
minutes, 24 seconds. The reason that the Jules Verne Trophy time is now higher
than the round the world record time is that Cheyenne’s Steve Fossett declined
to pay the Jules Verne committee a substantial entry fee to be eligible for the
trophy. The mostly French committee wanted something in the region of 30 000
Euros for Cheyenne to be awarded the trophy. Fossetts refusal to pay this
amount appears to have been met with widespread approval around the world.
