News By A Sailor For Sailors!

This week’s front-page pic on the Smooth Sailing web site shows an
International Moth sailing along on hydrofoil foils, with the hull completely
out of the water. The Moth, a single hander, is dwarfed by the yacht in the
background, the mighty new Skandia Wild Thing. It is an interesting study of
two very different boats. Both are at the cutting edge of sailing technology
although at opposite ends of the scale. The cost of the Moth was probably
equivalent to the cost of one winch on Wild Thing while one cant even compare
the running costs. Which owner has more fun though? Hard to say, I’d probably
enjoy the Moth more!
Texwise Practical Boaters Evening
Win A Musto Carribean Suit With Texwise
Dubai International Sailing Week
Texwise’s Practical Boaters Evening takes place on Thursday at their Strijdom Park
premises. Rick Nankin, of North Sails Cape Town, will be the guest speaker at
this, the first what are to become regular evenings. Through the Practical
Boat Owners Evenings Texwise aims to provide a forum at which such often
complex issues can be discussed with experts in different fields. Snacks,
drinks and wors rolls will be served to all those who attend. Please make sure
you reserve your place by phoning Texwise on 011 792 0243 or mailing steve@texwise.co.za.
The Lake Deny Yacht Club Round The Island Race takes place this weekend on the Vaal Dam. This year’s race is
sponsored by Bathroom Bazaar and the organisers are hoping for a record
turnout. 712 Boats is that most that have ever taken to the water for this
race, will there be more this time around? While the main race takes place
bright and early on Sunday morning there is plenty of sailing beforehand to
keep everyone occupied. The Commodore’s Race will be sailed on Friday afternoon
at 14:30 while Saturday will see the Tune Up Sprints starting at 11:00 and the
Tune Up Race at 14:30. In between there will be plenty of shore-based activity
as usual with stands and stalls on the lawns in front of the club. Here you
will be able to buy everything from a wide range of food to boating spares and
accessories. Friday night’s party will include a live band, Four Past Midnight,
while Cutting Jade will be playing live on Saturday evening. Also taking place
on the water during the weekend will be a pro wakeboarding demonstration, a
jet-ski round the island race on Saturday. There will also be the regular array
of aerobatic displays during the course of the weekend. All in all it should be
another fantastic event. Often the race itself pales into insignificance
against all the other things that are going on during the weekend but for some
it’s the most important part! On the water there is a big incentive for those
who take it seriously with R10 000-00 up for grabs for the first boat to finish
the course in under an hour. The current race record stands at 1 hour, 1 minute
and 27 seconds and was set by a Tornado some years back. Despite good winds in
recent years no one has been able to get within striking distance of the
one-hour mark. I think that it requires a special combination of wind and the
right boat with the right sailors on board. Having had a go in a variety of
skiff type boats I am of the opinion that a Tornado, or similarly fast cat, is
in fact that best suited boat to break the one-hour mark. To get around this
course quickly one needs to be fast in a straight line and fast on a reach.
This is definitely something that is best suited to a cat. Starting last though
they are often disadvantaged by all the dirty air that they have to get through
on the leg to the island. If it’s windy then its less of an issue but if it’s
light then its that much harder for them. It will be interesting to see who
comes out on top this time. We will bring you a full report on Monday. In the
meantime for more information visit the LDYC web site at www.ldyc.co.za.
Texwise, who offer sail repairs
and sales, textile solutions and a comprehensive chandlery, will be at LDYC for
the Round The Island Race Regatta. There they are offering you
the chance to win a Musto Caribbean Suit worth R2600. The suit is breathable, stylish & practical, a great addition to any
yachties wardrobe! Stunning off the water, it provides perfect protection from
whatever the South African climate serves up. To enter the competition you are
going to need to go to their stand, which will be on the lawn in front of LDYC
during the Round The Island Race Regatta. Apart from meeting the Texwise crew,
you will be able to browse through some of the large range of chandlers'
supplies that Texwise stock. Texwise is one-stop solution for all sailors where
you can order your North sails as well as stack packs, spray hoods and biminis,
which are made exclusively at our Strijdom Park loft. Most importantly perhaps
is the extensive knowledge that the Texwise team enjoys. This helps you choose
the right piece of equipment for your needs and ensures prompt resolution of your
boating problems. For more information on Texwise or their extensive range of
products visit their website at www.texwise.co.za.
Two young South Africans are currently taking part in
the Dubai International Sailing Week and performing very well too. Justin Onvlee, from the
Eastern Cape, and Aaron Larkens, from KZN, are both sailing in the Laser 4.7
class. The regatta started on Sunday with the 60 strong Optimist and 30 strong
Laser 4.7 classes taking to the water. Onvlee had an excellent day on the water
winning all three races in the Laser 4.7 to take the overall lead in the
regatta. Larkens ended the day in second place overall, ahead of Bahrainian
sailor Charlie Hill. Sadly I haven’t been able to get any further information
since Sunday with the ISAF web site proving to be more useful than the event’s
own site which doesn’t seem to be carrying results. I will endeavour to get the
final results from the regatta for next weeks issue. It is always good to see how
SA sailors fare overseas and especially good when they are doing well!
A South African
representative of the “European Certification Bureau (ECB)” in Australia, Mr.
M. Smith has conducted the tonnage survey of Ellen MacArthur’s 75 ft trimaran, Castorama B&Q, in
Sydney, Australia. This was done on behalf of the UK Marine and Coastguard
Agency (MCA). The tonnage survey is necessary for the UK flag
registration. The new trimaran has been
built with one objective - to set new solo speed sailing records. The new boat
is purpose built for offshore solo sailing at 22.85m in length and 16.2m in
width the trimaran weighs just 8.3 tonnes carrying a mast of nearly 30.6m.
Constructed entirely out of carbon fibre, and designed by Nigel Irens and
Benoit Cabaret, over 30,000 hours of work have gone into the build project to
date. ECB, the notified body for European Recreational Craft- and Marine
Equipment Certifications, was appointed by the Secretary of State for Transport
of the UK to perform the measurements on Ellen’s Castorama B & Q. For more
information on this project visit www.teamkingfisher.com.

MOORED at
Kariba, arguably the best sailing in the world, set in a Game Reserve and
exciting fishing waters for when the wind doesn't blow.
Sandawana is
a very pretty, elegant boat, and who can ask for more than that? She is
reluctantly available due to the owner going blind. (Shingles)
Designed by
Julian Baring-Gould (grandson of Sabine, novelist, best known for writing
"Onward Christian Soldiers"), she was designed to be very easy
for one person to sail, a twelve year old could handle her. Ketch
rigged, you can put up a lot of sail, but in a blow, you do not need to reef,
just drop a few. Also, being canoe sterned, you can run comfortably with
a storn, rather than having to bash your way into it, or risk being pooped.
