It’s another huge day for the Springboks tomorrow when they take on
the All Blacks in the Rugby
World Cup. This is a do
or die encounter as the loser goes home, something too ghastly to contemplate
for both sides. While they were in good form last week its fair to say that the
Boks haven’t had the best of seasons so it will be very interesting to see if
they can stand up to the pressure tomorrow. It will be a huge game and I am
sure that whatever the outcome the margins will be pretty tight. Kick-off is at
09:30 and the game will be televised live on Supersport.
Dinghy Sailing in Durban tomorrow,
Saturday, is to be hosted by the Royal Natal Yacht Club and will start at the
later time of 14:30. This is to accommodate the Sail Seminar, details of which
you will find below. Racing will take place on the deep-water course and is of
course open to all classes of dinghy and cats. Sailing will be followed by
snacks and drinks in the RNYC’s Foredeck Bar with this gathering doubling as a
de-brief for the sail seminar.
On Sunday the
Royal Natal Yacht Club are running the Urban Campbell Pursuit Race for keelers
offshore. The race will take the fleet up to Umghlanga or so and back again
with the starts staggered to, hopefully, get everyone across the finish line at
the same time. The first start will be at 10:30 on Sunday morning after an
09:30 briefing at RNYC. Entries need to be in a good while before the briefing,
preferably the day before, so if you are going to sail, give Nicola a call on
031-301 5425. This will help the handicappers get the starting order sorted
well in advance of the race. Last minute jobs aren’t so good for this sort of
thing. Afterwards there will be a braai and prize giving on the lawns at the
RNYC. This is always a good place to be on a Sunday afternoon with live music
and a good festive atmosphere.
So to the aforementioned Sail Seminar. The seminar
has been arranged by Peter Morgenrood of Quantum Sails and will be presented by
Barry Gately who is an experienced sail coach and sail maker. Barry grew up
racing dinghies before going to work for 5 times America’s Cup winner John
Wright as a boat builder and rigger. Moving on from dinghies his focus changed
to the small keel boat arena and he also turned his hand to public speaking,
giving seminars on deck layouts, tactics and strategy and the like. For a
period of time he was the J24 coach for the US Navy Sailing Academy after which
he joined Quantum Sails. During his sailing career he has won numerous national
and regional championships and has competed extensively around the world.
Barry’s seminar will take place in the Royal Natal Yacht Club’s Foredeck Bar
starting at 10:00 on Saturday morning. It is open to all sailors and might be
of particular interest to L26 sailors as one of Barry specialities is J24 sail
design. J24’s have a lot in common with L26’s so there could be a lot to be
learnt here. Should you require any further information on this seminar please
contact Peter Morgenrood on 082 804 7459.
The Electronic Specialities Radio Controlled
Laser National Championships take place this weekend at the Durban Radio Boat
Club. This promises to be a tough regatta with all the top contenders in good
form. Once again it will be interesting to see whether it is the proper sailors
or the modellers who come out on top. Looking at the form in the last few weeks
I think that it is the modellers who go into this one with a distinct advantage
but we will see, interesting things can happen on the day. Registration for the
regatta will take place not at the venue but in Charlie’s Bar at PYC from 09:00
until 10:00. This is to allow competitors to take in the SA All Blacks game
before heading off to the pond for the first race, which will start at around
12:00. As with all RC Laser events this should be a good one with lots of
sailing and lots of socialising on the banks of the pond. There will be a class
dinner at PYC on Saturday evening but to attend this you need to make a booking
by e-mailing Terry Flynn on rclaser@xsinet.co.za right now! For more information on this regatta or
anything to do with RC Lasers go to www.rclaser.co.za.
The time has come for the annual Keel Boat Safety Inspections to take place in Durban. These are vital in order to ensure
that your boat remains registered with the port and cleared for sailing
offshore Durban. Both the Point and Royal Natal Yacht Club will be doing their
safety inspections on the morning of Saturday the 29th of November.
The relevant inspection and registration forms are available from either of the
yacht clubs. It is worth remembering that when the boat is inspected the Ship’s
Radio Licence, Radio Operators Licence and Liferaft Certificate need to be on
board. For more information about the safety inspections please contact either
the Point Yacht Club on 031-301 4787 or the Royal Natal Yacht Club on 031-301
5425.
A unique new trailable 28-foot catamaran is
being launched at the Cape boat
show last weekend.
Designed by well known Cape based naval architect Alan du Toit and built by a
leading Durban manufacturer Sea Tribe, the main design criteria for the six
berth Suntribe Catamaran was that it be easily transportable
to any destination for launching or storage. The boat is built using the latest
materials and techniques for maximum lightness, strength, durability and high
performance. She is also very spacious
and comfortably appointed to provide hassle free, fun sailing. Accommodation
includes a chart table, two heads, a shower and six berths in the hulls. The
large cockpit area is covered with a collapsible bimini and includes a
well-fitted galley area. Stern steps in both hulls allow easy access to and
from the water. The boat has accommodation for one family in each hull with
additional sleeping space in the forepeak. The catamaran, which can be
"collapsed" for easy towing and reassembled by just two people comes
complete with a custom designed trailer, no mooring fees, and a base price of
R400 000. Optional extras are also available. This boat should open the
opportunity for easy sailing access to inland areas like Lake Kariba and Lake
Malawi and remote parts of Mozambique. The boat will be promoted through the
Sunsail group in South Africa. For more information on Suntribe catamarans
visit the Sun Tribe website at www.suntribe.co.za. boat
specially designed for high performance sailing in both inshore and trans-ocean
events like the Cape to Rio race.
A new hi-tech 37 foot
production has gone into production in Cape Town. The 37-Foot Reichel-Pugh design was
conceptualised by top local yachtsman Geoff Meek as an internationally
competitive one-design handicap racer. The yacht has been designed to the most
exacting standards with the first boat presently being built by Cape Town boat
yard, Acheson Rossa. The first three yachts on order, which come with a price
tag of R1,35 million each, will be launched in February next year. A total of
10 are projected for completion by the end of 2004. The boat is built entirely
in carbon to custom standards. Everything from the hull, to mast, sails and
even the entire interior is built from carbon with only the highest quality and
most exotic materials available were being used. One of the main criteria was
that it be dead easy to sail. There are no running back stays and no
overlapping headsails and the deck layout is standardised and streamlined to a
degree of such supreme simplicity that it
will be a sheer pleasure to step aboard and cast off
for the start line. UItimately she will
be a very powerful, super-fast yacht, both up and downwind. She has a near
perfect weight to ballast ratio and will surf at speeds of up to 25 knots. The
optimum number of crew will be seven. The interior can also easily be converted
by slight layout re-arrangement for day sailing or ocean races. The yacht will
initially be marketed locally, which bucks the current trend in the
multi-million rand a year South African yacht building industry that until now
has been largely export driven. The strong rand has allowed materials to be imported
at a vastly reduced price making the boat viable locally. For more information please contact Geoff Meek on
021-511 2154 or at geoff@za.northsails.com.
