The UCT Frostbite Regatta was held over the weekend of the 16th / 17th August 2003. A total of 45 yachts entered including the 11 entries from the Extra class. The Sprog class had 3 entries from UCT and 1 from Stellenbosch and as such was the only class made up entirely of students. Two races were held on Saturday afternoon in light to moderate breeze. Overnight Craig Sterling and Tom Nugent found themselves tied for first spot in the Sprog class with Toby Runciman and Camilla Thorogood, each having a first and second place to their names. Alan Keen dominated the Laser class with 2 firsts and Steve du Toit led Mark Sadler by 3 points in the extra class. On Sunday morning racing was postponed because of insufficient wind. By 13h00 a light breeze filled through and 2 races were held in very light and switching conditions. Mark Sadler enjoyed the conditions and ended his regatta with 2 first places closely followed by Steven du Toit finishing second in both races. Taariq Jacobs sailed a flawless regatta and finished with 4 first places followed closely by Matthew Shaw 5 points behind. Craig Latigan and Tyron Kerford easily won the Mirror class winning all their races. An enjoyable regatta was held by all, and UCT would like to thank Zeekoevlei Yacht Club for once again lending their bridge boat. Photos and overall results are available on the UCTYC website at http://sportsclubs.uct.ac.za/yacht. The top three places in each class were as follows:

SAMSA, the South African Marine Safety Authority, last week confirmed the appointment of South African Sailing to act as the national authority governing the control of all pleasure sailing vessels using the ports and waters around our coastline. This is something that has ramifications for every sailor in SA so it is worth reading more about it by visiting the Smooth Sailing home page where the full details are posted.

The Double Handed Post Optimist Plan published in Smooth Sailing on Friday has resulted in a great deal of debate, not just on the pages of our web site but also in dinghy parks and yacht clubs around the country. If you haven’t read it yet, do so now, the original is posted on the Smooth Sailing web page with responses on the Smooth Sailing Letters to the Editors web page. Amongst these I was very happy to see a good reply from the 29er class. Personally I think that this is one of the best alternatives available in SA and would like to see more youth sailors, make that more sailors in general, getting into this class. Read what everyone’s had to say and e-mail your thoughts to me at hethcot@iafrica.com.

The Sharks nailed Western Province on Saturday afternoon in a performance that put a smile on the faces of everyone in KZN. It’s always good when the Sharks beat Western Province and this one was time was no exception. The game itself was outstanding with some great play from both sides making it very exciting to watch. Actually towards the end it may have got a little bit more tense than exciting when it almost looked like WP had the better of the Sharks. Luckily it wasn’t to be and the solid Sharks defence held out for the win. Next weekend sees another tough game for the Sharks when they take on the only other unbeaten team in this year’s Currie Cup, the Bulls.  More about that on Friday though.

The Dart 18 World Championships started on Saturday but sadly I haven’t been able to find any results or reports on the regatta web site. Check it out later in the week though at www.dart18.com when it might have been updated!

Our Notices of Race page on the Smooth Sailing has all the NOR’s available to us. If you have a regatta coming up and would like to make the NOR available online then e-mail it to hethcot@iafrica.com and it will be posted and listed in this newsletter.
