Association with:
The Notices of Race list
continues to get longer and longer and it looks like there is going to be a lot
of travelling, certainly for Durban sailors in the next while. I have added a
few events to the list for which I don’t have NOR’s yet. These will be added
just as soon as they become available but in the meantime clicking on the event
name will at least give you the organisers contact details.

A Sailor’s View
This
Weekend At The Royal Natal Yacht Club
For
everyone in Durban tonight is you chance to see “Into the Eye of the Storm”. This video
will be screened in Charlie’s Bar at the Point Yacht Club at 18:00. It sounds
like there is going to be a good turnout for this one so the pub should be full
of yachties this evening. Snacks, including freshly roasted peanuts, that I am
told are almost more whorth while than any sailing video, will be served and
the bar will be well stocked with cold beer! Anyone else who can’t make it
tonight but wants a copy of the video should drop me an e-mail at hethcot@iafrica.com and I will add you to the list. Please be prepared
to pick up the cost of postage and copying, which I have had to organise commercially
as the number of copies was too great to do at home! Otherwise see you on
tonight at 18:00, or maybe a little earlier for a few pre-video drinks and
peanuts, in Charlie’s Bar!
It could be a long night out though! UNYC are holding one of their
famous Shipwrecked Parties at the UNYC Caprice tonight from around 20:00
onwards. After the stormy video at PYC, Caprice is the only place you want
to get wrecked. According to the UNYC Commodore, Colin Becker, the UNYC
Caprice has all the safety equipment - beers, funnels and spirits! Sounds
dangerous! Between 20:00 and 21:00 the usually cheap beers will be even cheaper
than normal with a happy hour happening. This is bound to be the party with the
cheapest beers in Durban tonight!
Tomorrow
sees the Springboks take on the All Blacks in New Zealand. This is going
to be a tough one for our team to win and probably an even tougher one for us
to watch. I am sure that most of us will though. Kick-off is at 09:00 and the
game will be televised live on Supersport. For some happier rugby watching site
down in front of your tv at 14:30 on Saturday when the Sharks take on the
Pumas. This game is being played at the Absa Stadium in Durban and with any
luck will see the Sharks continue on their winning way in this years Currie
Cup.

Rudy
McNeil, South Africa’s top placed sailor at the recent Optimist Word Championships sent us the following report on the regatta:
“The Optimist
World Championships were held in Las Palmas, Canary Islands from 27 July to 2
August. The event was attended by 50 nations with 221 sailors participating.
Each nation was entitled to a maximum of five entrants. South Africa was
represented by Rudy McNeill (PYC), Aaron Larkens (PYC), Brett Stirk (East
London), Sam Waterson (East London) and Alex McClarty (Cape). Our Coach was
Dale Hudson from Cape Town and Manager, Rob Walker, from KZN.
The
event started with the traditional opening ceremony, which was an amazing
experience. Each country was introduced by last years winner and the president
of the International Optimist Dinghy Assoc. The entire regatta was very well
organized and all ran very smoothly. As our manager said "a very slick,
top class, professional regatta".
The
first few days the winds were an average of 12 knots with a choppy swell of 2 -
5 metres. The South Africans soon got used to the conditions and once settled,
started improving in results. On the second to last day the wind picked up
to approx. 20 knots, gusting at 25 knots. This suited us very well and our
results improved even more. we sailed a total of 15 races and all of us
managed at least one good race in the regatta that kept our spirits up. Rudy
4th, Brett 11th, Sam 13th, Aaron 15th and Alex 35th. Although I was DSQ
for bands and Brett OCS, we all still knew we could do it. The starts were
really tough and competitive and the races were long. The finishes were all
very close with no long distances between the boats as all the sailors were
very good. The prize giving was also top class with the handing out of medals
and trophies and with a large fireworks display to end off the evening.
The
final results were Rudy 140, Aaron 150, Sam 171, Brett 175 and Alex 178. The
top two South Africans were from KZN.
The
event was won by Matika Filip from Croatia with Jesse Kirkland of Bermuda
second and Sebastian Peri Brusa of Argentina, third.
This
was a really great experience for all of us and we made lots of friends from
different countries.
Way to go Oppie sailors!”
The Sailing KZN Colours Dinner
has been rescheduled for Friday the 12th of September. The dinner
will take place at the Point Yacht Club with tickets available at a cost of
R90-00 per person. Advance booking is essential and can be done by contacting
Sandy at Sailing KZN on 031-301 3078. This is the first time in a number of
years that Sailing KZN Colours have been awarded and with a fairly long list of
recipients it promises to be a festive evening. The Colours Dinner will become
an annual event and we will shortly be updating the Sailing KZN web site with
the points standings so you can keep track of your own progress towards getting
KZN colours.
There isn’t much in the way of sailing on the go this
weekend but it should be a good one for a bit of social activity down at the
yacht club. At the Royal
Natal Yacht Club at the moment they
have a great seafood platter on special on their menu. Including prawns,
calamari, langoustines, line-fish and mussels you also get a complimentary
bottle of Graca when you order the platter. So on Sunday especially it is going
to be hard to decide between the famous carvery lunch and the seafood platter!
For those looking for something less formal there will of course be the braai
on the lawns as usual. As long as the weather plays ball this is always a good
option. Should you need to book a table in the Britannia Room or for any other
information on what’s going on down at the club contact Nicola on 031-301
5425.
