The funeral service for Dick King, the late Commodore of the Point Yacht Club, will take place today, Friday the 27th of June. The service will be held at the St Olav’s Church in St Thomas’s Road, Durban at 14:00.

The Long-Term Weather Forecast for Durban as far as next Tuesday, the third day of the NCS Regatta, is as follows:

Sunday will be 22 degrees and partly cloudy with moderate northeasterly wind dying later in the day.

Monday will be 23 degrees and sunny with a moderate northeasterly wind blowing.

Tuesday will be 24 degrees and sunny becoming cloudy. The wind will be a moderate northeasterly but will turn to the southwest late in the afternoon.

For a more detailed forecast go to www.weathersa.co.za or keep an eye on the regatta notice board where the latest weather forecast will be posted each day.

The NCS Regatta starts tomorrow, Saturday, when most competitors are expected to arrive in Durban and registration takes place at the PYC. As the week has gone by the level of activity at PYC has been gradually increasing with some competitors already in town. Launching of yachts starts today although most will be launched on Saturday when their crews get into town.  On Saturday evening there will be a pre-regatta party at the PYC starting at 18:30 and going on as late as the crowds stay. Not only will there be beer food and soft drinks but also live music. The sailing starts on Sunday with a sail-past in the harbour mouth outside Thirsty’s at 10:30 followed by the first two races of the regatta, the first of which is scheduled to start at 12:00. From Sunday onwards the daily routine will be one of racing from 12:00 each day followed by a ripping party in the club afterwards. Smooth Sailing will send out daily race reports and results updates at the end of each day of racing. Full results and pictures of the action on the water will be posted on the Smooth Sailing web site where we have an NCS Regatta page dedicated to news of the event. The social program for the regatta has recently been added to the site and the first results should be up by early Sunday evening. If anyone requires any specific information on the regatta not included on the web site please contact me at hethcot@iafrica.com.

During the NCS Regatta Texwise Natal will be providing a Fetch and Return Sail Repair Service. Sails that need repairs after a tough day on the water can be left in the Texwise trailer that will be located next to the guard hut at the top of the walk-on mooring. When leaving your sails in the trailer please don’t forget to fill in and attach a tag to your sail bag. The trailer will leave the yacht club a hour or two after the fleet has returned to the marina each day and will return each morning with a load full of repaired sails ready for another days sailing. Clyde Kinloch of Texwise Natal is the man to talk to regarding this service or if you need to discuss any out of the ordinary sail repairs. Clyde can be contacted on 082 572 3408.

Don’t forget to enter the Manex Marine competitions, which are now up and running on the Lipton Cup web site. For the competitors there is a fantastic Suunto M9 watch up for grabs. This really is a special prize and anyone taking part in the Lipton Cup will be doing themselves a disservice by not entering this competition. Entries for this competition need to be in by 12:00 on Saturday the 5th of July. For non-competitors the prize is a very special clock and barometer set, manufactured by Stockburger Instruments in Germany to be won. Non-competitors have the advantage of an extra week to enter this competition, with the closing date on Friday the 11th of July. To complete the entry forms for both these competitions you will need to spend a bit of time on the Manex Marine web site gathering the information needed to answer the questions so don’t leave it to the last minute to enter.

It will be a busy weekend at the Royal Natal Yacht Club this weekend with a whole load of social activities on the go. This evening, Friday, the monthly club draw will take place. There is a change of venue for this month’s draw with this one being held in the Foredeck Bar. There is a whole pile of prizes to be won by those members who hold tickets, and if you don’t hold a ticket you can always sort that problem out by making a quick call to the club and getting yourself one. The weather forecast for Sunday looks great which means a great afternoon on the lawns is in store for everyone who is not sailing. Catering wise there will be the usual excellent choice of braai meats and salads with the Ala Carte menu available as well for those who prefer to have there cooking done for them. Background music will be provided by Rick McGreggor who will be playing from early in the afternoon. For those looking for something more serious the famous Brittania Room Carvery will be available. As always, and particularly on as busy a weekend as this, booking is essential. You can book your table by contacting Nicola on 031-301 5425. On a less pleasant note, the RNYC committee and management would like to advise members and owners that the boats behind the Foredeck have deteriorated to the extent that they are beyond repair. They are unsightly and reflect a poor image of the Club. Any of these boats that are not identified and removed by 06 July 2003 will be taken to the Municipal dump. Should you be the owner of on of these boats or have any queries regarding exactly what is going to be disposed of please contact Steve Coxon on 031-301 5425.

Looking over the entry list it certainly looks like a strong one and it is hard to pick a winner out of this lot. The crew lists make for even more interesting with several of these posted on the regatta web site at www.vascocdagama.co.za. It is hard to pick a winner out of this bunch. On the whole the fleet looks a lot stronger than last years with several handicap contenders in there. So it should be a good race!

Earlier this week I was lucky enough to catch a documentary program, Into The Eye of The Storm, the Sydney Hobart Tragedy. We all know what happened in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. The fleet got lashed by the worst possible weather conditions in the Bass Straight, several yachts were sank and six sailors lost their lives. All were well prepared but as it turns out not well enough for the ferocity of the conditions that prevailed. While the conditions that lashed the fleet in this race were most certainly very extreme, we get extreme conditions on the South African coast too. With the Vasco race just around the corner now is probably a very good time for everyone taking part in this race to have a very careful thought about safety. Watching this documentary might give you a big fright but it will probably also make you that little bit more careful when you are out there! In addition to watching this documentary I also recently had the opportunity to see the life raft from our L34, Close Again, being inflated for it’s annual service. Seeing just what is inside the life raft was also quite an eye-opener and made me realise the importance of grab bags and their contents. I recorded a copy of Into The Eye of The Storm and would be more than happy to lend it to anyone who wants to see the program, drop me an e-mail at hethcot@iafrica.com if you would like to see the tape.
