Sunday will be 17 degrees and partly cloudy clearing later. The wind will be a
moderate southwesterly.
Don’t forget to enter the Manex Marine competitions, which are now up and running on the Lipton Cup web site. For the competitors there is a fantastic Suunto M9 watch up
for grabs. This really is a special prize and anyone taking part in the Lipton
Cup will be doing themselves a disservice by not entering this competition.
Entries for this competition need to be in by 12:00 on Saturday the 5th
of July. For non-competitors the prize is a very special clock and barometer
set, manufactured by Stockburger Instruments in Germany to be won. Non-competitors have the advantage of
an extra week to enter this competition, with the closing date on Friday the 11th
of July. To complete the entry forms for both these competitions you will need
to spend a bit of time on the Manex Marine web
site gathering the information needed to answer the questions so don’t leave it
to the last minute to enter.
Tomorrow sees the final Dinghy Racing of the 2002/2003 season taking place in
Durban when the final round of the RNYC Ocean Sailing Series is sailed. Two races are scheduled for the afternoon with the
first of these starting at 14:00. Racing will be on the deepwater course and
Jof Heathcote is the race officer for the afternoon. Prize giving for the
series will take place in the RNYC’s Foredeck Bar after sailing. There is no
rugby, keeler sailing or any other distractions to lure you away from the water
this week. I look forward to seeing a big fleet of dinghies taking the
opportunity to finish off the season in style.
Sunday sees the NSRI Barrel taking place. It all starts at 10:30 with
a sail past in the bay. At 11:00 there will be a fun race on the Wednesday
evening course for all boats taking part in the sail past and any other that
haven’t made the sail past too. Remember that there is an entry fee of R10-00
for juniors, R20-00 for dinghies and R50-00 for all keelers taking part in the
race with the finds going directly to the NSRI. Once the sailing is over the
traditional prize draw will take place on the lawns at the RNYC from 14:00
onwards. Tickets for the prize draw will be on sale throughout the day both on
and off the water and the more tickets you buy the more money we make for the
NSRI and the more chances you have of winning something on the day! the RNYC’s
catering staff will be out in full force keeping you fed and watered throughout
the day with the bars open, braai fires lit with meat and salads available as
well as the ala carte menu for those who don’t like cooking their own food.
Please remember that this is a fund raising exercise and that the NSRI is
probably the most valuable cause that yachties can support. I have been through
the reasons why several times before so am not going to go through them all
again. Just take my word for it and support them!
Internationally there are two big and very
unique events taking place this weekend. In Holland the worlds biggest cat
race, the Round Texel Race takes place. At the time of writing this
year’s race had attracted an entry of 560 beach cats. Many of these are
high-powered asymmetric boats, Tornado Sports, F18’s and the like. Texel is an
island off the coast of Holland, which the fleet races around. Being something
out of the ordinary this race attracts a huge fleet with some of the world’s
top beach cat sailors taking part in everything from regular Hobie 16s and
Darts to the latest high tech racing equipment. It is an offshore race so
conditions can be tough and it has been known for a fair amount of chaos and
carnage to ensue when the wind and sea get up. The event has a really good web
site at www.roundtexel.com. It is well worth a look. The race itself
takes place on Saturday with a series of staggered starts for the various types
of cat taking part.
Also taking place on Saturday is one of
the biggest races in the world, the Round the Island Race. One thousand five hundred
boats have been entered in this year’s race, which takes the fleet around the
Isle of Wight. The most amazing variety of yachts will be taking part in this
years race from state of the art racers and maxi yachts down to the smallest
classic yachts at the other end of the fleet. For some it is a quick sail, the
record stands at 3 hours 8 minutes and is held by a mutihull, a 60-foot
trimaran to be exact. For others, especially the smaller, slower monohulls, it
is a slower trip taking all day and often part of the early evening to
complete. The race starts off Cowes and takes the fleet around the island in an
anti-clockwise direction. It’s an early start for sailors taking part in the
race with the first fleet getting underway at 06:30 and the last start at
08:00. While they may start at different times the entire fleet is racing for
one trophy, the famous Gold Roman Bowl, which is awarded to the handicap
winner. Most of the UK’s big name sailors will be taking part as well as
several well-known international stars. Robin Knox-Johnstone will probably have
the highest profile of the lot this year as he is sailing the race in Suhaili,
the yacht in which he famously won the first single-handed race around the
world. For more information on this race visit the event web site at http://www.islandsc.org.uk/rtir/index.html.
