Your Weekend Weather according to the SA Weather Service
should be as follows:
Durban & Richard’s
Bay: Saturday will be 23
degrees and partly cloudy with morning and evening rain with a moderate
southwesterly wind blowing. Sunday will be will be 26 degrees and fine becoming
partly cloudy with a fresh southwesterly wind blowing.
Midmar: Saturday will have a maximum temperature
of 17 degrees with a minimum of –2. There is a 20% chance of morning frost
after which it will be a clear day with a light southwesterly wind blowing.
Sunday will be pretty much the same with the maximum temperature at 20 degrees.
Vaal Dam: Saturday will be 15 degrees and cloudy
becoming partly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers and with a light
southwesterly wind blowing. Sunday will be 17 degrees and partly cloudy
becoming sunny with a light southwesterly wind blowing.
Cape Town: Saturday will be 19 degrees and cloudy
with a 30% chance of overnight rain. The wind will be a fresh northwesterly.
Sunday will be 16 degrees with a 60% chance of morning showers. The wind will
be a fresh southwesterly.
The
memorial service for Joe Harris will be held in the Anchorage at the
Point Yacht Club today, Friday, the 6th of June at 11:30.
The Sailing KZN AGM takes place at 19:00 this evening in the Royal Natal Yacht Club’s
Trafalgar Room. Please note that the meeting is set to start at 19:00 and not
18:00 as previously advertised.
With the weather forecast as it is there
should be reasonable turnout for tomorrow’s Sangoma Race. The race, from Durban to Richard’s Bay, starts at 11:00 tomorrow,
Saturday morning. There will be a skippers briefing in Charlies Bar at PYC at
09:00 in the morning with the fleet proceeding to sea from there. With a couple
of IRC boats heading up to Richard’s Bay for the following weekend’s IRC KZN
Champs there should be at least four racing boats taking part in this race. I
also hear word of at least one cruising boat taking part, hopefully a few more
of these appear on the morning. The race is part of the Sailing KZN Blue Water
Series, which also incorporates the Vasco Da Gama Race. With all four racing
boats taking part in this event also set to do the Vasco Race there is a fair
bit at stake on the water tomorrow.
Now while some of us are enjoying a good downwind slide up
the coast, the rest will be focused on the Springboks first test match of the year. This takes place tomorrow afternoon
at the Absa Stadium with the Boks up against Scotland. A good solid Bok side
has been selected and I think that those lucky enough to be able to watch can look
forward to seeing some good old fashioned SA rugby tomorrow afternoon. I think
that the Scots may be in for a torrid time and I for one hope that they get a
solid drubbing from the Boks. Kick off is at 15:00 and for those not lucky
enough to be in the stadium, or sailing up the KZN coast, the game will also be
televised live on Supersport.
Ian Ainslie sent us the following report on recent
activities and developments at his Izivunguvungo Sailing School in the Cape Town:
“Izivunguvungu Sailing School
Supported by the Mediterranean Shipping Company
Foundation for Youth Empowerment.
June
2003 Newsletter
No
rest for the wicked or the very keen! A bit of rain can’t stop them! This is
what we are up to at the moment.
The
Strange Brew sailing Center gets a face-lift!
Mediterranean
Shipping Company has sponsored the fixing of our building inside the Simon’s
Town Navy Base. We now have sanded and varnished wooden floors, fixed ceiling
and security gates. Good Times! Captain Sarno once again helping out.
Lipton
Cup
South
Africa’s premier sailing event, the Lipton Cup Regatta, takes place between the
6th and 13th of July in Durban. Two teams will again
represent Izivunguvungu. The defending champions, helmed Ian Ainslie and our
development team, helmed by Mathew Mentz. Mediterranean Shipping Company and
The Foundation for a Brighter Future jointly sponsor the teams. Our squad has
been training very hard and working to get the boats ready for the competition.
Thanks to Gerrie Heggie snr, who has helped Mathew a lot with the preparation
of Donna Mia... Always. We hope to once again win the main trophy as
well as be the first development team home.
Germany
Trip
Claire
Bouah from Sun valley and Anele Jim from Redhill Informal Settlement have been
chosen to go to Bremen, Germany to attend youth camp organised by the German
War Graves Commision. This organisation exposes the youth to the horror of war
by restoring gravestones of war casualties. Admiral Koos Louw has convinced (of
course) Captain Salvatore Sarno to donate some "air miles" for their
tickets. Admiral Louw is a very good fundraiser! I told him that I used to have
an End Conscription Campaign sticker on my boat during the dark ‘80’s which
said "wouldn’t it be a good day when the military has to hold a cake sale
to raise money" ! "Ja, I was sure you were one of those blerrie
trouble makers" he shot back.
Anele
and Claire will also stay with a German family and go on cultural trips around
the city of Bremen. They will be there between the 7th and 21st of
July. I’m sure that they will be excellent ambassadors. We are having the
nightmare of organising Anele a birth certificate/ID book/ passport in time.
Hopefully the department of home affairs decide that it is easier to do than
having to endure constant torment from us. A battle of wills!
Development
Regatta
Our
next regatta will be held between the 3rd and 5th of
October 2003. The regatta will be sponsored by Central Boating World. Expect
great racing, warmer weather, cool prizes and the odd whale. E-mail or phone me
for a copy of the notice of race or pick one up at Central Boating World in
Bree Str. Cape Town.
Boat
building
A
large part of our efforts go towards equipping the kids with life skills and
the motivation to go after their goals. One of the ways in which we can help
them is to teach skills that can help them obtain employment. We will start to
build a dinghy at the end of July with a group of 6 kids. The emphasis will be
on the process of learning skills and working with attention and diligence.
Manuel Mendes of R&M Boat Builders will be helping us with this project.
Non-Profit
Organisation
Hopefully,
we will be fully registered as a non-profit, welfare organisation by the time
you read this. We have a separate bank account. Thanks to Charles Maisel for
helping us with the registration and to Jimmy Baigrie for contributing towards
the fee.
Izivunguvungu
sailing league
Our
current league ends on the 20th of June. Wandisile Xayimpi is
nervously looking over his shoulder to see if he can maintain his points lead.
Anyone is free to enter a team and join the ladder. Our next series will run on
every Friday afternoon between August 16th and September the 19th.
New
Boats
John
and Meegan Jones donated a Laser to the program, which has been used every day
since we got it. We have got the Europe dinghy donated by Hans Thijsse sailing.
We only let the more advanced students loose on this exciting, but more
fragile, boat.
Well,
good sailing and feel free to come and visit us any time.
Regards
Ian
and Mathew”
Entries have now closed for the 2003 Lipton Cup Regatta. The full entry list ahs now been posted

The following news of the Orion Vasco Da Gama Race came from the event organisers this week:
‘IRC
NEWS - GOOD FOR 5 BOATS!
Here's
some great news - if you want to participate in the Race, and have never before
had your boat IRC Certified, send us an email QUICKLY at sa.irc.ca@iafrica.com and we will
pay 50% of the cost of Certification for you. This offer is limited to
the 1st five boats, so get in quick - it's strictly 1st come first served.
While speaking of IRC, very recently a ZYC boat was re-weighed after the owner
suspected that his boat was incorrectly rated. It was weighed and came in
at a little under half a ton heavier than previously weighed, meaning that his
rating will be improved forthwith. It is noteworthy that this particular
boat was weighed with a "private" scale the first time, and not the
SAS Scale, which was used the 2nd time around.
