There was a small error with the mailing list this morning as a result of which everyone on the list got an e-mail intended for me. I apologise for the inconvenience and that fact that it didn’t contain anything saucier than a subscription request!

Now on the topic of sauciness, usually the complaints come to me, but in this instance they were directed to the writer of one of our articles published on Friday. Greg Barker tells me that he received various e-mails criticising his report on the Hyeres regatta as not being exciting enough. Knowing that we can’t have that Greg got writing again and sent us a Letter to the Editor, which you will find on our Letters to the Editor web page, detailing some of the more exciting events that went on during the Hyeres regatta. I am sure that you will all find this letter suitably exciting! On the Smooth Sailing home page we have a picture of the 49er fleet coming off the start line at the Hyeres Regatta.

There was some good sailing offshore Durban yesterday where the penultimate round of the KZN Lipton Selection Series took place in conjunction with the final round of the PYC Jockey Series. Five L26’s enjoyed some close racing in a building northeaster. It was clearly quite hard work as there were some very tired looking crews in the yacht club afterwards. By all accounts it was the kind of tight racing that the fleet needs as they enter the final stretch before Lipton. Harry Ellens on Parental Guidance dominated the racing after a break for the last few weeks taking wins in both races sailed. Orion Zephyr with Alec Lanham-Love at the helm finished second in both races with Jerome McLoughlin’s Harken cementing her position at the top of the Lipton Selection Series table with a 3rd and a 4th. This coming Sunday sees the selection series completed with the final two races to be sailed in conjunction with the second round of the RNYC’s Hartley Series. There is then only one further weekend of racing before the KZN Champs, and that is on Sunday the 1st of June when the PYC’s Rose Bowl Series is to be sailed. So, there is not an awful lot of sailing left. Hopefully for what is left the L26 fleet in particular will be as strong if not stringer than we saw on Sunday. There are still several good boats missing from the fleet and it would be good to see them back on the water competitively. The results of the PYC’s Jockey Commodore Series are as follows:

1st Orion Zephyr                     Alec Lanham-Love                8 Points

2nd Parental Guidance          Harry Ellens                           9

3rd Harken                              Jerome McLoughlin              10

The full results of both the PYC Jockey Series and the KZN Lipton Selection Series standings to date are posted on the Smooth Sailing Racing Reports web page.

Des Fairbank submitted the following report on the IOM Radio Sailing KZN Champs that were sailed at the Durban Radio Boat Club this weekend:

“Ten skippers entered the IOM Provincial Championship sailed on Sunday with Gino Pozzibon making use of a SAA Cockpit seat to get his newly imported Gadget down from the Transvaal. Wind conditions were ideal with a light North Easterly pressing the top rigs and strengthening after lunch pressing the No. 2 Rigs. 16 Races were sailed with all boats sailing together. After some excellent racing the event was won by Gino Pozzibon on 24 points followed by Des Fairbank on 30 and third place went to Sheldon McGlone on 40. Some Maritzburg Radio Yacht Club news is that MRYC will be in action again this coming Saturday afternoon, the 17th of May, sailing 36” Shipmates.”

Now that winter is well and truly here and the official Wednesday Evening Fun Racing has come to an end it is time for something a little different,
Night Racing! From this coming Wednesday, the 14th of May, the new
Winter Wednesday Night Series begins. Starting at 18:00 this will definitely be night sailing so working navlights are essential. The racing will also be less formal than the summer series. With no committee boat or laid marks the races will be self timed although it is hoped that everyone will start at roughly the same timed. The course will make use of the harbour marks already in place. The Sailing Instructions, which include the course details, are available on the Smooth Sailing web site at www.smoothsailing.co.za/winterwed03.html or for more information contact Pat at PYC on 031-301 4787.

The Fireball and Hobie 16 Nationals both took place recently and although we didn’t get a race report from either but since they are both fairly important regattas we thought it worthwhile to find the results and post them on our web site. So, you can now find the full results from both these regattas on the Smooth Sailing Racing Reports web page.

South Africa’s biggest sailing events this winter all take part in KZN with the NCS Regatta, Lipton Cup and Orion Vasco Race all taking place in quick succession. Indications are that all three are going to be bumper events with big entries expected. The NCS Regatta offers free shipping, courtesy of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, to yachts coming from coastal ports while there is also a generous travel allowance for those bringing their boats from inland. As far as the shipping goes MSC will allow yachts to be shipped out of Durban after Lipton Cup and the Vasco race which gives you a good opportunity to do either of these events off the back of the NCS Regatta. Today however is the shipping deadline so if you are even thinking of getting your boat on the ship to Durban you need to think quick and get in touch with the regatta organisers ASAP. You will find an online booking form at http://pointyachtclub.tripod.com/id19.htm#shipping_schedule.

The three events mentioned above are all big ones and all worth winning. To make sure that you are on the pace for one or all of these a few new sails are probably in order. Hood Sails are the fastest and most economical solution to any boat speed problem. Hood Sails took line honours in the recent Inhaca Island Easter Race and were well represented throughout the rest of the fleet. On Sunday offshore Durban Hood Sails showed the KZN L26 fleet a clean pair of heels winning two straight races in the build-up to the Lipton Cup. Order some more boat speed for yourself today by contacting Harry Ellens at Hood Sails on 083 700 0108 or at hoodsails@saol.com.
