Your Weekend Weather according to the South African

Durban & Richard’s
Bay: Saturday

The wind will be a moderate northeasterly but expect a fresh southwesterly to
come through in the afternoon.

with a light northeasterly wind blowing. Sunday will be 27 degrees becoming
partly cloudy later in the day with a 30% chance of afternoon thunderstorms.
The wind will be a light northwesterly but a light southeasterly will blow in
the afternoon.
Vaal Dam: Saturday will be 25 degrees and partly
cloudy becoming sunny with a light northerly to northwesterly wind blowing.
Sunday will be 24 degrees and partly cloudy with a 20% chance of thunderstorms.
The wind will be a light northwesterly.
Cape Town: Saturday will be 23 degrees with a few
evening showers in the south. The wind will be a moderate southwesterly. Sunday

It all starts happening at Midmar this afternoon where the HMYC 9-Hour Endurance Race takes place tomorrow. With upwards of 80
entries expected it looks to be a fantastic event again. I am hearing word on
the ground of a few late campaigns coming together with some talented sailors
involved. Being a handicap event there could also be some serious thought going
into who is sailing what as the fast guys try their best to make sure that they
come out on top. Its not all about that though and I am sure that there will
once again be some very festive and social boats making their way around the
course on Saturday. It’s not just about the race though, on Saturday evening
there will be a huge party in the SAB tent with 500ml draughts on sale for only
R6-00 and a wide range of quality meals on sale too. For those who have entered
and signed in there will be a free breakfast on Sunday morning, served from the
beer tent. One wonders if this isn’t because the organisers expect that some
sailors wont have left there from the night before yet! The race itself starts
at 10:00 on Saturday morning and finishes and hour or so after dark at 19:00.
The prizegiving will take place a little after that and the beer tent will once
again be in full swing. It should all be loads of fun and I look forward to
seeing many familiar faces there. For more detailed information on the event
visit www.geocities.com/hmyc_racing.
At the Hyeres Regatta the South
African sailors taking part have had mixed fortunes. The regatta ends
tomorrow. Their positions are currently
as follows:
Laser Gareth Blankenburg After 8 Races 14th
(157 Entries)
49er Gregg Barker After
8 Races 41st (53 Entries)
For more information on this event visit the regatta web site at http://hyeres.ffvoile.net/.
Bernard Stamm completed his clean sweep of
the Around Alone Race in Newport Rhode Island yesterday. He crossed
the line first in every leg of the race, although a time penalty on the
previous leg meant that he didn’t win that one. It has been a comprehensive
performance for Stamm on Bobst group Amor-Lux. Stamm has clearly been in a
class of his own in a race that has lacked a little in the way of competition.
With quite a few boats falling by the wayside the fleet that will assemble at
Newport after completing the race is now considerably smaller than the one that
started it. In class two Brad Van Lieuw is one track to emulate Stamm with an
even more compressive victory than Stamm managed over his class one rival.
Other than Van Lieuw the racing in class two has been the closest in the fleet.
With the race winner now safely in port it is left for the rest of the fleet to
finish in the next few days. For more information visit the race web site at www.aroundalone.com.
