Ellen Smashes Single-Handed Round The World Record
The Sanlam Round the Island Race took place at
LDYC this weekend. Sadly we couldn’t be there, for the second year in a row,
but by all accounts the event lived up to its usual high standard of
entertainment and sailing. Once again the main race took place in relatively
light conditions and no one came close to breaking the 1-hour barrier and
claiming the R10 000 for doing so. 407 boats started the race but the rate of
attrition was high with only 107 making it to the finish. This is the second
year in a row that the race has been sailed in extremely light conditions after
several years of good wind. Fastest around the course was Eric Cook’s Tornado
in a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes. With line honours going to the cats handicap
wise it turned out to be a good year for the keelers again. Shosholoza’s Mark
Sadler sailing the Thompson 7 Wild Monkey Dance with a full crew of Shosholoza
rock stars, managed to finish 6th over the line, enough to give them
handicap honours ahead of 2 Dragonfly trimarans and a bunch of monohull
keelers. The first dinghy on corrected time was Graeme Willcox on his 505,
ending up in 17th place overall. It was certainly a long slow race
this year; scrolling through the results I see that the last boat to finish did
so in a time just short of 8 hours 30 minutes. Good commitment by that crew
just for getting to the finish line. A very long day for the race officer
though! The top positions on corrected time were as follows:

Wild Monkey Dance |
Thompson 7 |
Mark Sadler |

2nd |
Krokodil |

Ben Mienie |

Another outstanding effort by young Justin
Onvlee saw him win the Dubai Junior Regatta ahead of a fleet
of 54 Laser 4.7 sailors from around the world. Although the current Laser 4.7
World Champion didn’t have it all his own way in this regatta ultimately he
ended up a comfortable winner. While we pretty much expected Justin to do the
business at this regatta I have to admit that I was somewhat surprised to see
Rudy McNeil finish up in second place. This was Rudy’s first Laser 4.7 regatta
of any kind making this also an exceptional achievement. The regatta ended with
12 races having been sailed in mostly moderate conditions. Overall the South
African contingent fared well with 4 sailors in the top 10 and all but 1 in the
top half of the fleet, and even that 1 was only just below the halfway mark.
This shows that there is some good talent coming through the junior ranks in
the Laser class. I just hope that their enthusiasm remains and they all carry
on competing both locally and internationally. If they do, the future looks
bright! SA sailors competing in the Laser 4.7 class finished as follows:

Ellen MacArthur
has set the world on fire by breaking the Single-Handed
Non-Stop Around the World Record in her trimaran, B&Q Castorama. She
circumnavigated the globe in 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds in
the process beating a record that many had thought would stand for years to
come. Last year when Francois Joyon set the record many thought that it was an
impossible time to beat. The Frenchman was hailed as having achieved something
truly incredible and many yachting publications subsequently named his as the
most impressive yachting feat of 2004. In taking 1 day, 8 hours, 36 minutes and
49 seconds off Joyon’s time Macarthur has proved most pundits wrong. While she
did it in a smaller boat than Joyon’s Ellen did have the advantage of weather
routing, something that Joyon, due to the very tight budget on which he did his
voyage, did not have. Clearly this gave Ellen a significant advantage however
it still doesn’t take away from the magnitude of this feat! In getting around
the world faster than any single-hander has done before Ellen had to battle
problems on board which included generator failures and a severe burn to her
arm while trying to repair the problem. Conditions in the Southern Ocean were
wild as usual while her trip up the Atlantic was fraught with difficult weather
systems. Ellen has achieved many great things in her sailing career to date however
this has probably been the most significant. One things for sure though, it
wont be the last! For more information visit www.teamellen.com.

I received the
following from the South African J22 Class regarding the Proposed 2006 J22 Worlds that were to
have been held in Durban and their postponement until 2005. While I don’t
necessarily agree with the reasoning I trust that the postponement will allow
an even better worlds to be organised!
“The International J22 Class World Championships,
scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, in 2006 have been postponed by
12 months to 2007. There are a number of reasons for this, one being
sponsorship, two being the Shosholoza campaign and three, the strong growth of
the class in Europe, specifically in France and Germany.
The decision was made unanimously by the SAJ22CA executive committee in a meeting at the end of last year, after the Dutch J22 Class Association approached South Africa with a bid to host the worlds in 2006, possibly in France. The Dutch will be hosting this years Worlds in Medemblik, Holland from the 1st to 9th July 2005. Even though Europe will be credited with hosting two consecutive World Championships, the SAJ22 Committee thought it best to give our slot to them due to the above reasons. Hosting the Worlds in Durban in 2007 makes a lot of sense, considering that our sailors who are actively involved within the America's Cup campaign will be able to participate and a formidable sponsor will have been found - We trust we have made the right decision.
On a more local note, the 2005 SAJ22 Class Nationals are to be held during Nelson Mandela Bay / Isuzu Week in PE from 24th to 30th April - we hope to see a good turnout of competitors for a truly enjoyable week of sailing.”
MACS Shipping will once again
be sponsoring the Inhaca Island Easter Race from Inhaca to Mozambique. The MACS
Inhaca Race 2005 will start on Easter Friday, the 25th of
March, off the north end of Inhaca Island. The races will finish in Richard’s
Bay with most yachts expected to be home within 36 hours, weather dependent of
course. As always this race offers an excellent opportunity to spend a week or
more sunbathing on the island paradise of Inhaca before getting back into race
mode for the race to Richard’s Bay. This year it also offers the first chance
for crews with their eye on the Mauritius Race to get some sea miles under
their keels. Both the delivery trip and the race itself offer some valuable
opportunities to test boats and crews. There are plenty of both who need it!
The Notice of Race has been posted on the Smooth Sailing Notices of Race web page.
Our Notices of Race page on the Smooth Sailing has all the NOR’s available to us. If you
